Effective spelling instruction requires students to coordinate three interrelated forms of word knowledge. This framework is well established in structured literacy research and is reflected across the NSW English K–10 Syllabus.

• Explicit instruction matters. Structured, teacher-led instruction in morphology and phonics leads to significantly greater gains than incidental approaches (Bowers et al., 2010).
• Morphological awareness transfers. Teaching morphemes improves not just spelling but also vocabulary and reading comprehension (Carlisle, 2010).
• Poor spelling has cognitive costs. Difficulty encoding words slows writing and reduces compositional quality (Sumner et al., 2016).
• Practice builds automaticity. Repeated, spaced retrieval of spelling patterns builds the automatic recall needed for fluent writing (Daffern, 2016).
• Metalinguistic knowledge helps. Teaching students to talk about word structure (using terms like prefix, base, suffix) improves their ability to spell unfamiliar words (Daffern, 2018).
